Why did I write The Tour Book?
The Tour Book came about as a response to the many questions I get from bands and artists who are looking for advice about the live music industry. These requests for information are always along the same lines:
I know the answers to these questions.
I work on an average of 200 shows every year as a Tour Manager, audio engineer or as a combination of both.
I am also recognized as an expert on the live music industry - the Guardian newspaper and Sky News ask me for my opinions on the way this industry is changing.
I personally know a vast mount of amazing musicians, bands, solo artist, session musicians, turntablists, MCs, road crew, artist managers, promoters, booking agents and record label people.
I have seen hundreds of bands, musicians and artists perform live.
Working for these acts has given me a unique insight into how bands get big shows, raise their profile and make money from playing shows and touring.
Unfortunately I do not always have the time deal with enquiries and to answer your questions.
It would great if I could simply say instead 'you should go and read X and Y books, they will tell you all you need to know about touring and gigs' However, after researching the subject area, I found there was no definitive book about on gigs, touring and the modern concert industry.
I was surprised there was no book about touring, gigs and how to get bigger and better shows and so I decided to write one myself. The result is "The Tour Book".
There are several really good books about the music industry out there (I totally recommend All You Need to Know about the Music Business by Donald Passman

What you need to know about the live music industry
Let's be honest, you might consider live music to be a small and specialized part of struggling music industry. Every day there are newspaper and internet articles full of reports of falling CD sales and bands being dropped from their recording contracts. Those reports may be true but it is not ll doom and gloom. Let me tell you now - live music is a huge industry. In 2006, concert ticket sales totaled $3.6 billion in North America alone! As these revenues continue to grow it is obvious that playing live is an integral part of the success for any musician, band or artist.
However, there is a huge difference between writing and recording your songs in your home studio or rehearsal space and then going out and putting on a show.
If you can't cut it live then you really are not going impress any audience, let alone gain a record deal and sell your music.
OK, but how do you cut it live?
How do you make sure your show has the maximum impact?
How do you appear professional and knowledgeable in an industry that has its own conventions, language and baffling technical terms?
How do you get booked into a venue - and get paid?
How do you then get bigger and better shows?
These are all the questions you should find the answers to.
The Tour Book will answer those questions.
Barry Jepson, tour manager for acts such as Placebo, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Bryan Adams, Nick Cave, Iron Maiden, Kasabian, Ozzy Osbourne, Kaiser Chiefs, Will Young, Tool, Girls Aloud, Rammstein and Brian Ferry and lecturer in live sound at Brighton Institute of Modern Music
The music industry is extraordinarily fickle and you will often only get one chance to make that lasting impression.
By being unprepared and unprofessional you run the risk of making mistakes. Those mistakes could lead to the end of your career, before you even get started!
If you are serious about working or performing in the live industry you are going to need some help to avoid those mistakes. That is why I wrote 'The Tour Book', to help you!
